## Definitions

### Meter

Meter or metre [m] is the base unit of length for the SI system of units. It was originally conceived as 1/10,000,000 of the distance along earth's meridian from the equator to the North Pole (a full longitude circle of earth is approximately equal to 40,000,000m). Today, it is defined as the distance traveled by light in vacuum in \(\frac{1}{299\,792\,458}\) seconds. This definition offers the advantage of invariance through space and time but on the other hand is impractical for everyday use.

Multiple and fraction units of the metre are defined through the decimal SI prefixes, as shown in the table:

Unit | Symbol | [m] |
---|---|---|

Nanometer | nm | 10^{-9} |

Micrometer | μm | 10^{-6} |

Millimeter | mm | 0.001 |

Centimeter | cm | 0.01 |

Hectometer | hm | 100 |

Kilometer | km | 1000 |

Megameter | Mm | 10^{6} |

### Unit of foot

Foot [ft] is a unit of length for the Imperial and US customary system of units. It was historically conceived as the length of a human male foot. Today, it is defined through the meter SI unit as: 1ft = 0.3048m.

Multiple and fraction units of the foot are defined as shown in the table:

Unit | Symbol | [ft] |
---|---|---|

Inch | in | 1/12 |

Yard | yd | 3 |

Mile | mi | 5280 |

### How to convert feet to meters

- Multiply distance in [ft] with 0.3048
- The result is the distance in [m]

For an approximate conversion:

- Multiply distance in [ft] with 3
- Divide the result by 10

### How to convert meters to feet

- Divide distance in [m] by 0.3048
- The result is the distance in [ft]

For an approximate conversion:

- Multiply distance in [m] with 10
- Divide the result by 3
